The Institute for Effective Instruction (IEI) Certification program was established to provide an on-going measure of the effectiveness of instructors abilities. Colleges and universities certify individuals who have successfully completed a teacher training program. IEI certifies individuals as to their "on-the-job" instructional effectiveness.

IEI partner organizations conduct observations in the instructional environment. During these observations, the observer notes how well the instructor follows the best practices from the IEI effectiveness standards. The notes from these observations are forwarded to the IEI for review and the award of the proper certification.

Basic Certifications are awarded after an in the field evaluation of the instructor. Rather than rely on a video tape or other artificial means, the instructor is observed during an actual instruction period with students present. The certifications available include:

Awarded when the observed instructor displays developing instructional competencies. Usually this certification is awarded to instructors who have recently entered the educational area, and are not yet displaying the fully developed competencies of a skilled instructor.

Awarded when the observed instructor displays overall competency in instruction with positive behaviors apparent. The skilled instructor demonstrates mastery of most of the skills necessary to provide effective instruction.

Awarded when the observed instructor displays excellent instructional competency with primarily strongly positive behaviors apparent. This individual should be evaluated in depth for possible award of higher levels of recognition.

This instructor has demonstrated mastery of the majority of the skills and attributes of an effective instructor, and has demonstrated the application of these skills in multiple situations. The instructor displays only strongly positive behaviors, sets a standard for others to follow and maintains a continuous effort toward improvement.

This instructor has demonstrated mastery of virtually all skills and attributes of an effective instructor. The instructor is a model of effectiveness. This instructor has the knowledge and capacity to teach others the skills and nuances required to become a Master Instructor and displays their capabilities in an unrelenting manner.
